A Song for One Bee

  • 10 spreads
  • About 1 min of song
  • English · Español

Tavi set out six chairs and hung up a curtain for a concert. But nobody came. Nobody at all? Look closely: one small bee is landing on chair one, and one is somebody. A story-and-hook book about a first brave hum, singing for one, and singing anyway. The story is read aloud, and from the moment Tavi chooses to hum, one short song comes back at every big moment. Find the bee on every page.

Level 1 · First Songs

Listen, move, and join in with a sound.

The child: Listens, moves, claps or taps, and joins in with a sound, a word or a sign when the song stops for them.

The grown-up: Sings most of it. Pauses before the word that comes back so the child can fill it in, any way they can.

What the levels mean

Goals

  • Communicationvocal initiation: the child's first sound starts the music; self-expression: any sound counts
  • Regulationdisappointment, carrying on after an interruption, a slow breath in and a hum out
  • Socialsinging for someone, or for no one; joining in
  • Cognitivecounting to six

In a session

Find-it (the bee on every spread, hidden until spread 4), counting (six chairs, six bees), a predictable phrase to say together ("And waited."), calling out what Tavi can't see, bumblebee breath (in slowly, hum out), the held page that waits for the child's own sound, humming on D with a tone bar, movement (flap, loop, arms wide, one eye open), a held quiet for listening (7), the hook's opening hum on D before the words
