Levels

Pick the song that fits the voices in the room

Every book has a level from 1 to 3. It tells you how much the song asks of the singer. Start someone new to singing at Level 1 and move up when they're ready; a child who sings all day can go straight to Level 3.

Level 1: First Songs

Listen, move, and join in with a sound

The child
Listens, moves, claps or taps, and joins in with a sound, a word or a sign when the song stops for them.
You
Sings most of it. Pauses before the word that comes back so the child can fill it in, any way they can.
The song
  • A few words on each page
  • Most of the song comes back again and again
  • A small tune that stays close to home

Level 2: Sing Along

Sing the parts that come back

The child
Sings the chorus and the lines that repeat, answers a call, says their own name in the song.
You
Leads the verses and hands over the parts that come back. Pause points and the name round fit here.
The song
  • A verse and a chorus on most pages
  • About half the song comes back
  • A tune that moves around more

Level 3: Sing It Through

Longer verses, more to remember

The child
Sings whole verses, follows a story, keeps counts and sequences, and can learn the tune on the keys.
You
Shares the singing. Try word mode and the melody view, or the Piano Path lesson for the tune.
The song
  • More words on each page
  • New lines most of the way through
  • A wider tune with bigger steps

How a book gets its level

We measure the song itself, the same way for every book, from its words and its melody. Each measure scores easy, middle or more; the scores add up to the level.

When our reviewers know a book is easier or harder than its numbers say, they set its level by hand.

What we measureEasyMiddleMore
Words sung on each spreadHow much there is on each pageup to 2223 to 32over 32
Different words in the songHow much there is to learnup to 6061 to 110over 110
How far the tune movesFrom its lowest note to its highest, in half stepsup to 910 to 12over 12

Mostly easy is Level 1, a mix is Level 2, mostly more is Level 3.

Make any book easier or harder

A level is where a book starts. The reader lets you meet the child where they are.

  • Slower. Turn the speed down and the song waits for every voice.
  • Pause points. The song stops before the last word of a line so the child can fill it in.
  • Word by word. Each tap sings one word, so the child sets the pace.
  • Change the key. The key wheel moves the song lower or higher to suit the voices.
  • Play it. Ready for more? Learn the tune on the keys with the Piano Path.
