The Scribble Tangle

  • 10 spreads
  • About 2 min of song
  • English · Español

Lulu wants a song with everybody on the Big Page in it. In hops Trino with a bright ee, Sasa scuttles in going sss, Bop hides that one big eye and... POP! Frufru shakes in with a giggly brrr. Then everybody goes at once, faster and faster, and all their crayon marks knot into one big bouncing Scribble Tangle. Uh-oh! What untangles a tangle? A slow green hum, and one sound at a time. A read-aloud story of six early sounds, from silly to calm, with one sing-along hook that grows a sound every time. Look for Noodle on every page.

Level 1 · First Songs

Listen, move, and join in with a sound.

The child: Listens, moves, claps or taps, and joins in with a sound, a word or a sign when the song stops for them.

The grown-up: Sings most of it. Pauses before the word that comes back so the child can fill it in, any way they can.

What the levels mean

Goals

  • Communicationvocal imitation of six early sounds and their mouth shapes: oo, ee, sss, pop, brrr, mm; joining in any way
  • Regulationsilly to calm: all at once tips into the Tangle, a hum and one at a time undo it; volume and tempo
  • Socialturn-taking, waiting for a turn, joining a group song
  • Cognitivesequencing and recall: the chain
  • Motormovement imitation, every move with a seated version

In a session

Sound-and-move imitation: a pause after every new sound in the story, and the hook's bar of rest to bring it in; the cumulative chain (recall in order, a fill-in); find-it (Noodle on every spread); all at once, then one at a time; a hum with hands on the tummy to feel the buzz; two foot taps (Noodle's) as a way to join without a voice
